Abstract

Completion of an elective project at the University of Glasgow Dental School is a progression requirement that entails a period of self-directed and enquiry-led learning. This study sought to uncover students’ expectations and perspectives of their elective experience as there is a scarcity of supporting literature to determine if this activity has significant educational value. This qualitative study utilised a participatory research methodology,ensuring that students were at the centre of the enquiry process. Three student co-researchers analysed data collected from their peers, using a questionnaire and a focus group meeting. The findings support maintaining autonomous, enquiry-led, independent learning-focused electives and also highlight aspects of the elective which students particularly valued. This has allowed a deeper understanding of students’ perceptions of, and motivations for, particular elective projects, enabling the elective programme to respond to changing environments in education and global health. The outcomes of this study have informed the redesign of the dental elective study programme and the associated quality assurance process.

Author Biographies

Niall Rogerson, University of Glasgow

Niall Rogerson is a Clinical University Teacher at Glasgow Dental School. He qualified BDS in 1981 and MEd in 2014. He worked in General Dental Practice before commencing his teaching role in 2007. He is Director of the Dental Elective Programme and School Teaching Quality Assurance and Enhancement Officer.

Kate McKenna, Dental practice

Kate McKenna graduated BDS from the University of Glasgow Dental School in 2015. She completed Dental Vocational Training with NHS Highland and undertook Dental Core Training with NHS Dumfries and has now returned to General Dental Practice.

Louise Robinson, Dental practice

Louise Robinson graduated BDS from the University of Glasgow Dental School in 2015. She then completed Dental Vocational Training in Lanarkshire. She is now working as a General Dental Practitioner in Lanarkshire.

Callum Wemyss, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde

Callum Wemyss graduated BDS (Hons) from the University of Glasgow Dental School in 2015. He then completed Dental Vocational Training in Glasgow and is currently undertaking Dental Core Training with NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and is an Honorary Clinical Teacher at Glasgow Dental School.

Jeremy Bagg, University of Glasgow

Jeremy Bagg is Head of the University of Glasgow Dental School. He qualified BDS in 1979, PhD in 1982 and is a Fellow in Dental Surgery of the RCS (Edin) and RCPS (Glasg). He is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists and the Faculty of Public Health.

Catherine Bovill, University of Edinburgh

Dr Catherine Bovill is Senior Lecturer in Student Engagement at the Institute for Academic Development, University of Edinburgh. Her research focuses on: students and staff co-creating curricula; peer observation of teaching; higher education internationalisation.
