Focus and Scope
Postgraduate Pedagogies is an online open-access journal devoted to articulating and sharing the perspectives of graduate teaching assistants (GTAs). We publish texts that convey the experiences, reflections, and analyses of current and recent graduate teaching assistants, those who work with GTAs, and those who support them. The journal offers theoretical reflection as well as empirically grounded and case-study-oriented contributions.
This journal defines GTAs as predominantly doctoral candidates who are involved in teaching and teaching-related tasks, teaching undergraduate, masters, or even fellow doctoral students. Students at Masters level too may have similar teaching responsibilities. GTAs are thus a diverse group. What unites them is their unique position in the HE landscape, similar to – but not the same as – other categories of HE teachers.
Not without controversy, GTAs now make up a substantial part of the Higher Education workforce across all disciplines. Books, articles and courses abound that teach them how to teach. Yet there exists no systematic account of their experiences, perspectives, methods and approaches to teaching. There are few dedicated places for GTAs to reflect and share their teaching experiences. Postgraduate Pedagogies therefore foregrounds the voices and wisdom of GTAs.
The journal publishes a variety of contributions, including Reflective Essays, Opinion Pieces, Case Studies, Book Reviews, and Technology Reviews. We do publish original research articles, provided they are conducted with, or by, GTAs.
While we publish work primarily from GTAs, we will also consider submissions from academics and support staff that work with them. Co-authored articles with PhD supervisors or academic teaching staff are also acceptable. For more details please see the Submissions section.
Peer Review Process
Postgraduate Pedagogies uses a double-blind peer review policy. Submissions will be initially reviewed by an editor before being distributed to two anonymous reviewers. From initial submission, we aim to review and return articles within 4-6 weeks. Authors will then have 8 weeks to make any changes. If a submission is not returned within the agreed timeframe, then it will be rejected and must be submitted as a new submission.
Open Access Policy
This journal provides immediate open access to its content on the principle that making research freely available to the public supports a greater global exchange of knowledge.
